Episode 008 - Joy in Healing

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! Do you have turkey on the menu for Thanksgiving? Did you know that turkey is high in tryptophan and which is the precursor to melatonin, which helps us get a good night’s sleep?

Thanksgiving means a time to reflect on the things I’m grateful for. I thank God for my husband who has been through thick and thin and always keeps me grounded. I am thankful for all of you listening, that you are supporting me and learning how to support your body optimally and holistically.

Holistic Care and how to find healing and relief without drugs. Finding joy in finally having a diagnosis for all your mystery symptoms. Now where do I go?

Episode 008 - Joy in Healing

Is there a way to feel better and find a path of healing that are more natural and holistic? Sometimes drugs are needed but health is when the body finds homeostasis (balance) in the body. Drugs deplete vitamins and minerals and make finding a true balance much harder.

“Pretox” Before You Detox

A new term I heard on the Mast Cell Summit with Beth O’Hara and Kelly McCann I liked. This concept was discussed on one of the interviews and that term was “pretox before detox”. This was a new way to phrase the “clean up” phase of this journey. Clearing out the pitfalls, the triggers, the foods, the chemicals in your cleaning supplies, makeup and personal care products. Give up those artificial scents in air fresheners, dryer sheets and scented detergents that may be triggering your chemical sensitivities.

Low Histamine Diet

Eating a “Low Histamine Diet” by removing all HIGH histamine foods from your diet and replacing them with lower histamine options. The SIGHI (Swiss Interest Group Histamine Intolerance) list is the one most refer to. A shorter, more simpler version can be found in their leaflet. Also note, Dr. Becky Campbell’s book (links below) includes the Low Histamine Diet and which foods to avoid initially and what to watch out for.

Keep a food journal and learn what foods “trigger” your symptoms and tailor your diet to YOU, not to a “list” that is meant to be a guide. Make notes on bowel habits and consistancy is key. Jot down any noticable issues (trouble sleeping, bowel changes, nausea, nasal congestion, PMS, menstrual regularity/irregularity, etc).

Another great suggestion was to rotate your food choices, don’t eat the same foods every day. Instead rotate menus to be eaten in a three day rotation or what you need. The typical transit time for foods through the digestive system takes approximately three days from the date eaten to voided. By rotating your food choices this gives you a clearer picture of which foods are problematic for you and provides a greater amount of choices of foods if you are rotating your menu this way.

For the first two weeks (minimum) avoid any dairy, grains, legumes and any high histamine foods. Start cooking your food and avoid processed foods that include additives that are problematic for your system.

Cooking vegetable oils (canola, soy, cotton seed, sesame, peanut) should be replaced with healthier oils. Coconut oil for high heat, olive oil for dressings, other oils palm kernel oils are easier for digestion and healthier too!

Reduce your sugar and give yourself grace and love yourself with a fresh fruit or vegetable. Make sure to include plenty of fats in your diet which will keep you feeling full and make snacking a thing of the past. Once you give your body what it needs it is easier to say “no” to that sweet. Sugar feeds Candida and other yeast and/or fungal infections and starving them and breaking up their biofilm you are a less desirable host.

On Medications, Take Supplements or Herbs?

I included a new book for your reference that helps understanding which medications are depleting vitamins and minerals, often the very ones you need the most. Check for any reactions between herbs and prescribed drugs and be informed of potential problems before there’s a problem. See the links below for the book.

How Common Mineral Deficiencies Impact Our Health

Every second, there are 37 billion billion reactions (you read that right) happening inside our bodies. Each one needs enzymes to occur, and enzymes need nutrients like minerals to do their part of the job. Big picture, that means minerals have an enormous impact on our health. But we’re seeing an epidemic of mineral deficiencies, in an age of overnutrition with starch and sugar and undernutrition of essential nutrients. Even small amounts of insufficiency can lead to big problems.

Dr. Mark Hyman interviews Dr. James DiNicolantonio, on his podcast The Doctor’s Farmacy, lots of great information to thrive. Dr. DiNicolantonio is Doctor of Pharmacy and a cardiovascular research scientist. A well-respected and internationally known scientist and an expert on health and nutrition, he has contributed extensively to health policy and has testified in front of the Canadian Senate regarding the harms of added sugars. He serves as the associate editor of the British Medical Journal’s Open Heart, a journal published in partnership with the British Cardiovascular Society, and is on the editorial advisory boards of several other medical journals. Dr. DiNicolantonio is the author or coauthor of over 250 publications in the medical literature. He also is the author of five bestselling health books, The Salt Fix, Superfuel, The Longevity Solution, The Immunity Fix and The Mineral Fix.

Walk in the Woods

My dog, Sadie, and I go for a walk in our woods in the back of our property. My husband keeps a path for me to enjoy “nature bathing” in my own backyard. Our walk included signs that a bear does indeed poop in the woods.

I enjoy my nature walks and being in the moment and mindful of the miracles around me. I see God in everything in nature and I am closer to Him in a garden (or in nature) than anywhere else on earth.
