Episode 014 - Truth Shall Set You Free

Happy New Year! This year we are moving into not only a new year but a totally new beginning on our journey to wellness. Time to make those new year’s resolutions, find peace, learn to love yourself and love others. Nobody can do this for you…your future and your health is in YOUR hands, with faith ALL things are possible.

Being the Best ME I Can Be

My personal new year resolution is being the best I can be…the best ME. Being authentic and sharing my true self with you is my main new year’s resolution. I am expanding in my own understanding and learning to not be afraid of judgement. I am speaking from my heart as I learn new things, I want to share them with you. Learning something new every day is a key to staying young. Open minds and open hearts can heal this world. I want help others find their personal peace and to ultimately help them move towards a stronger faith, a world without fear, a world of peace.

I’ve always been “camera shy” and hated public speaking on stage. I’m fine behind the microphone but doing videos, especially solo podcasts sends a shiver down my spine. As a kid I was in a piano recital and forget everything I’d learned once on stage. It was a good thing it was a piano duet concert with 40 pianos and 80 kids…nobody noticed, except my parents. I couldn’t explain why my mind went blank, my knees knocked and my stomach had butterflies. Can you relate?

I learned a lot from Trudy Scott, about pyroluria and why I had such social anxiety and needed to “recharge” after any interactions with large groups of people. I wondered why I wanted to isolate further and withdraw into my shell. I learned a lot about GABA too. I talked about GABA last week in Episode #013 - The Truth Never Dies.

Pyroluria (Pyrolle Disorder)

Pyroluria is a loss of red blood cells via the urine that is defined as “mauve factor” due to the color of urine with traces of these red blood cells. Nutritional deficiencies develop due to the loss of B6 and zinc along with these malformed red blood cells. Stress also leads to a loss of these essential vitamin and mineral combinations, B6 and zinc, as well as others, such as magnesium.

Vitamin B6

Whole fresh foods are loaded with B6, as is raw milk and commercially processed foods destroy this heat sensitive vitamin. The Standard American Diet and eating mostly processed foods, women on birth control pills, or people on high protein diets, taking antibiotics, diuretics or those with a high alcohol consumption are likely deficient in B6. Did you know B6 is a natural diuretic? I find relief from nausea when I take vitamin B6 in it’s bio-available form known as P5P. The usual form of B6 in most vitamins are Pyrodoximine HCl which the body converts it into the P5P form. This conversion requires a methyl group and those with MTHFR issues may benefit from the P5P form.

Zinc

Zinc is one of the most important minerals in our body to function properly. Zinc helps the immune system, and deficiencies will be noticeable due to the loss of the senses of taste and smell. Physical signs of low zinc usually shows up in the nails with white spots or ridges, either horizontal known as Beau Lines or vertical lines. (These lines are not due to injury to the nail bed but show up as a deficiency in zinc.) I had these in my thumbnails as long as I could remember until I started supplementing with zinc.

When zinc is low, typically copper is elevated and can become toxic especially if to elevated by other sources like birth control pills, HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) and copper IUDs. Estrogen and copper seemed to be intertwined and usually one goes with the other.

Benefits of Zinc | The Most Important Dietary Mineral | Nutrition Library

Copper and zinc are inverse of each other so it is wise to test before supplementing. If you take a multi vitamin with copper in it then it is best to take the zinc at another time of the day to avoid one offsetting the other. Keeping the zinc and copper in the right balances is like a double edged sword and there are differing opinions on whether anyone should supplement with copper, especially if low in zinc. I will refrain from providing any guidelines on what is best for your situation. This is why working with a knowledgeable nutritionist like Trudy or a functional medical professional is best, and always test, don’t guess.

Stress, both physical and emotional, cause the body to lose zinc and become deficient. This is especially true if dealing with chronic stress. If you are on estrogen based drugs, discuss alternatives with your health care provider or supplement if needed, after testing to determine your specific requirements.

Preterm and lower birth weight babies is attributed to low levels of zinc in the mothers. Prolapses are another condition for mama zebras, especially when low in zinc and medically pushed to full term…ask me how I know.

Evening Primrose Oil is beneficial for anyone that has pyroluria. This is an Omega 6 oil and most doctors will debate this issue, insisting on Omega 3 oils and telling you to avoid the Omega 6 oils. Those with pyroluria can extract the Omega 3’s from food better than most but we have issues assimilating enough of the arachadonic acid which is what evening primrose provides and it happens to be an Omega 6, but we need it for dry skin, hair and nails but also to protect the mylein sheath of our nerves. Biotin, or vitamin B7 is often recommended, especially for skin, hair and nail health.

Beauty

Perfection in everything is a stress we need to let go off. Women are encouraged to be “beautiful” using products that could be attributing to sensitivities or high histamines. Hair products, makeup and personal care products (deodorants, perfumes, toothpaste and sanitary products) can all be problematic. Learn to live without the social pressures that make you miserable and eliminate the world’s version of beauty. God looks into your heart, not at your outward appearance. He loves you just as you are.

Butterflies and Waltz of the Kitties

Last summer I enjoyed “dancing” with my kittens and watching the butterflies who visited the garden. The Monarch’s presence reminded me of the verses in the Bible:

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Romans 12:2 (NIV)

and

31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

John 8:31-32 (NIV)

Starting this Wednesday I’ll begin releasing a series of blog posts that center on growing sprouts and microgreens, the powerhouse of nutrition you can do even in winter or in a small space. Hang out with me as I venture into an avenue of nutrition that I don’t want you to miss!

Happy New Year! Believe in yourself and your body’s ability to heal and have faith. You CAN do it!
