First Things First
I’m introducing a new series of posts to appear only in blog format on Wednesdays that feature posts I wrote during the “lockdown” starting in May of 2020, when I started my most recent foray into sprouts and microgreens. Every Wednesday I’ll share another post on how to grow food indoors on a small scale. You won’t believe how much nutrition these little versions of the garden variety have.
I’ll still be doing The Lone Zebra podcast every Sunday with the focus on healing for all of us “zebras” but these Wednesday posts will focus entirely on growing and enjoying sprouts. I’ve shared recipes and everything I learned along the way. Who knows when this information just might come in handy?
I started here with a short intro and the first of the series that I promise you will teach you how to grow microgreens or sprouts and why you should. With that I leave you with the beginning of a whole new education that I didn’t want you to miss.
I guess since we don’t really know one another, it’s time for introductions. So I’ll start. I’m not your spring chicken, I’ve been around the block a few times, but I’m always learning something new. This is my secret…on how to stay young and vibrant.
I’m writing this, May of 2020, where America is still in this crazy time in our history where half the country is still in “lock down” for a pandemic that never really was. While everyone is talking about health and safety, no one is talking about nutrition and building a healthy immune system. So here I am.
I’ve learned about nutrition the hard way, through the “school of hard knocks” and a lot of research. What I’ve learned isn’t in medical textbooks, and isn’t being shared in a “fake news” world. Heck, they don’t want you to know how to be strong and healthy. So I’ll fill you in…at least with what I’ve learned.
I’m not in it for the money…I’m in it for the vitality.
My gateway veggie was sprouts, back in the 70’s as Woodstock came and went, natural health took off. Sprouts were the “in” thing and once I tried them, I was hooked. Nothing tasted fresher and gave me more vitality than a sandwich with a fresh, vine ripened tomato slice adorned with avocado slices and topped with alfalfa sprouts on two slices of whole wheat sunflower bread! I was ready for more. I dabbled in mung beans and they were good, but alfalfa…well there was something that clicked.
Eventually I got married, had kids and moved into the “fast lane” which didn’t include sprouts, except for an occasional treat. I got sucked into the processed foods and the “Standard American Diet” (SAD) and became oblivious to what was happening to our food.
Fast forward to 2003, when we literally “bought the farm” and started our organic garden on virgin land. The veggies came first, then some flowers and herbs and now microgreens, our “manna”, nutrition for the millennium.
Put down that cookie and follow me…
