Cortisol is one of the hormones released when you’re under stress and too much of a good thing isn’t good, it can be down right destructive to your body. What can you do when you have stress that can’t be mitigated? Is there a way to protect against the damage chronic stress does to the body?
I watched this video, The Only Way to End Stress with Dr. Eric Berg, DC and learned that oxytocin, the “bonding” hormone that new mother’s bodies release after the birth of the baby is available for us too. Oxytocin is also released when you nurture others. A great way to help lower the cortisol levels is to volunteer, share your knowledge and by making things better for another person your body responds with oxytocin. Being in a community helps to create a bond with others and boosts the oxytocin levels and reduces the negative effects of cortisol.
Stress increases inflammation and often steroids are prescribed to reduce the inflammation but once treatment is done the body rebounds and the inflammation can get worse. Steroids are not safe for me due to the effects on the heart rhythm. Last time someone prescribed them to me they nearly killed me. I had a sudden cardiac arrest, it was the “straw that broke the camel’s back”. I always check CredibleMeds database before taking any prescriptions.
Did you know stress slows down the absorption of vitamin D? Wow, I didn’t know that, did you? I really must learn how to reduce the stress and the fear and anxiety that goes with it. The first step I did was to turn off the tv and the “doom and gloom” news and take a walk in nature. These damaging hormones and chemicals from the stress can be flushed out and help with sleep by light exercise. The fresh air and sunshine are also nature’s greatest “medicine”. Exercise also helps the lympatic system cleanse the crap you’ve accumulated from the stress. It’s kind of like the septic system in the body to flush out the toxins that have accumulated.
I learned a lot more about stress and a new treatment, NET (Neuro Emotional Technique) when watching the documentary below. I’ll be doing more research into this in the future. The technique is explained below along with links for more information.

Research Focus
Our ground-breaking research focuses on Neuro Emotional Technique (NET), which is based on the concept that unresolved emotional trauma is stored in the body. Emotions such as excessive, unresolved anger, grief and fear may affect people long after they have forgotten the cause. Since emotional reality dramatically affects health, using NET to identify these negatively charged emotions (Neuro Emotional Complexes) and releasing them can normalize abnormal physical and behavioral patterns. ONE's research aims to validate these mind-body techniques that improve physical health and make these practices widely available to patients in need of help.
